Lines are a little cloudy!

August 8th, 2006 at 04:05 pm

Spending because you want something not because you need it where do you draw the line?

Is it okay to buy something just on "want" alone if it is a really good deal?

I try never to pay full price and only buy things when they are on sale no matter whether I "need" it or "want" it. But if something is just on clearance, prices slashed, marked unbelievably low whether I truly need it I end up buying it. The same goes for yard sales I don't always need everything I buy I just want it.

Am I really spending responsibily or am I just filling my urge to spend?

I am starting to question my motives.

You wouldn't be human if you never bought based on "want." It's impossible to never do that, and if you try to deprive yourself, you'll start feeling resentful about frugality as a way of life. Everything in moderation, and in keeping with one's budget, i say.

I asked a semi-similar question a few days ago and my fellow bloggers suggested a 'gift box' for future gifts.

In your case, I would give myself a budget for frivulous spending...and then stick with it. If you dont use the money, it can accumulate...otherwise, within the budget, you get to pay for any wants guilt free!

(as Fern says, it is just human nature to have wants...)
